![]() One way to edit a film is to add colour to it. However nowadays (because it is now all digital) there is very little or no benefit to in camera editing and as a result very few if any directors still use it. Alfred Hitchcock was very big on the idea of in camera editing and did it in a lot of his films. ![]() One of the main benefits to this is the reduced cost of production due to less or no editing needed. These were of course very cheap to produce.Īn early form of editing was in camera editing which is where instead of shooting the scenes and then putting them into order a cameraman would shoot the film in order so that the editing of putting the film in order was done when the film was processed. No scene changes or editing just a single shot was needed before it was printed and then released. They were around ten minutes long maximum and comprised of a single shot. ![]() The Very first movies were called one shot films. Instead you witness the baby falling down the steps in the pram followed by a close up of a man swinging a bat and finally a look of horror on an older woman’s face.Īnother pioneer of film editing was DW Griffith who is best remembered for his controversial film “The Birth of a Nation” DW Griffith was one of the first directors ever to use the close up of somebody’s face as well as one of the first directors to direct a feature length movie ![]() One of the pioneers of film editing were Sergei Eisenstein who used the first montage in cinema with the Odessa steps sequence in “The Battleship Potemkin.” This sequence showed many horrid images for example the murder of a baby without actually showing them. However if he was opened a door and the next shot was of the inside of the room or building then that would be more understandable and make a lot more sense as there would be continuity. Continuity editing is editing a film so that there is continuity for example if in a film a man opened a door and the next shot was of a boat this would be fairly odd. What is editing? Editing is a process in filmmaking, which makes the film have good continuity and allows the film to be of a reasonable length. ![]()
